Anton Marcelius Monson
Anton Monson c. 1902
Anton Marcelius (Magnusen) Monson was born 2 Nov 1869 in the parish of Skåre, in the region of
Haugesund, in Rogaland county, Norway to Magnus Monson and Anne Sierena Nilsdatter. He emigrated
with his parents on 29 Apr 1870 from Stavanger, Norway and came to live in the United States. They
traveled on the ship Protector and arrived in Quebec on 20 Jun 1870. (View a transcription of lines
14-16 of the passenger list here or the actual document here.) The wicker basket that carried Anton's
baby clothes on the trip over is in the possession of his grandson.
Anton was living in Palo Alto Co, IA in 1895 where he met the Enes family. He moved to Crow Wing Co,
MN in 1900 and married Anna Elizabeth Larson on the 13th Mar 1901. Anna also grew up in Hamilton Co,
IA and was a neighbor to Anton's family. They had 2 daughters, Viola Sierena (14 Dec 1903) and Agnes
Christina (21 Jan 1907). Anna died on the 8th Jun 1907 from Pulmonary Tuberculosis. Since Anton could
not care for his young daughters and work, the girls went to live with their mother's parents. After a
couple of years, they went to live with Anna's brother Henry in South Dakota.
On the 8th of Jan 1914 Anton was remarried to Bertha Henriette (Enes) O'Leary. Anton and Bertha went
to South Dakota to bring home Viola and Agnes. Bertha had 2 daughters from a previous marriage
(Katherine Marie b. 1908 and Irene Bergetta b. 1909) and the four girls became a family quickly. They
spent many hours playing dolls together.
Anton was a carpenter and engineer during his residence in Crow Wing Co and he moved out to a farm
in Ideal Township in 1922. He was supervisor of the township for nine years and was very active in the
community. He was also an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes, MN.
Anton Monson died 20 Jun 1938 and is buried at Our Savior's Lutheran church cemetery.
