Magnus Monson
Magnus Monson c.1868
Magnus Monsen (later Monson, Munson) was born in Finnås parish, on Bømlo Island, in the county of
Hordaland, Norway on May 23rd, 1843.  His father was Mons Monsen and his mother was Dordi
Hansdatter.  He was confirmed on October 3, 1858 in his home parish of  Finnås.

In 1865 Magnus was living in Haugesund, Norway working as a barrel maker.  He returned to Finnås
and
emigrated with Anne Sierena in April of 1868 to get married.  He married Anne Sierena Nilsdatter
on
21 May 1868 in Avaldsnes, Rogaland, Norway.  On 2 Nov 1869 their first son, Anton Marcelius
(Magnusen) was born in Skåre, Haugesund, Rogaland, Norway.  On 29 Apr 1870 the family left from
Stavanger, Norway and came to live in the United States.  They traveled on the
S.S. Protector and
arrived in Quebec on 20 Jun 1870.  (View a transcription of lines 14-16 of the passenger list

here.)  The wicker basket that carried Anton's baby clothes on the trip over is still in
possession of the family.  Magnus and Sierena traveled with his brother
Bertel Monsen and his new
wife Lovisa.  Bertel and Lovisa changed the spelling of their name to "Munson" and settled in Illinois.  
Their first daughter Martha was born at sea.  

Magnus and Sierena settled first in
Polk Co, IA in 1870.  Here their sons Nels (10 Aug 1872) and Dedrick
(4 Mar 1876) were born.  Sometime between 1876 and
1880 Magnus and Sierena moved to Ellsworth
Township in Hamilton Co, IA.  Here they purchased and farmed 80 acres on the west side of Section 7.  
Their son John was born here on 5 Apr 1880.  They had another son, Benhard, in 1883 who died in
1886.  On 22 Mar 1888 they had another son that they also named Benhard.  

Sierena Monson died 14 Feb 1899 at the age of 51.  She is buried in the Ellsworth/Mackpela Cemetery
in Section 30 of Ellsworth township, along with their sons John and Benhard (1883-1886).  

Magnus remarried the following year to Kjestina (Jakobsdatter Hoversten) Hendrickson.  She was a
widow from Norway who had one daughter named Anna.  

Magnus died on 11 Sep 1914 at the age of 71.
